Research Assignment - Understanding Floods
You will be using the internet to research a particular flood event that has occured outside of the UK (the flood chosen should not be a result of a tsunami).
This lesson you will undertake 5 tasks that will help to prepare you for the homework task.
1) Choose an overseas flood.
2) Regarding your chosen flood find brief answers to the key enquiry questions: Where, when, why, what and who.
3) Make a note of any other questions you think you need to know the answers to.
4) Complete the evaluation questionnaire.
5) As a class create our success criteria for the homework task.
For the homework:
The purpose of your research is to find out about the how the flood was caused, the impacts of the flood and whether changes can or have been made to increase the flood resistance and resilience of the population involved.
You will independently produce a report in the form of a one-sided A3 poster. This can be produced by hand or by computer or a combination of both. There are 5 questions that need to be answered so there will be a lot of information to fit in a small space. You need to make sure that you plan your poster and use the space wisely so that the information that is on the poster is useful. There are 10 marks available for the overall presentation and structure of your poster.
With regards to the flood that you have chosen you will need to answer the following questions.
1. Where the flood took place? (5 marks)
Use a map to help explain the location.
2. When did it happen? (5 marks)
Create a timeline of the key dates for example stating when the flood began and subsided.
3. Why did the flood occur? (10 marks)
a) What natural/physical factors contributed to the flood?
b) What human factors contributed to the flood?
4. What was the impact of the flood? (10 marks)
a) Who was affected by the flood and how were they affected in the short term (hours and days)?
b) How were people affected by the flood in the long term (weeks, months and years) ?
c) What was the impact on the built environment (buildings and road networks) ?
d) What were the economic impacts of the flood?
5. How could similar floods in the future be managed to reduce their impact on people and property ? (10 marks)
