Machu Picchu is the mysterious lost city of the Andes. It is located 2430 meteres on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba River, 70Km from the city of cuzco in Peru.
The Inca civilisation grew around Cuzco in the thirteenth century. Their empire evenutally spread almost the entire length of the Andes. Machu Pichu was built around 1450.
The Spanish conquered the Incas and about the same time Machu Picchu was abandoned. It was not found by the Spanish as the sundial was not destroyed. It remained hidden until rediscovered in 1911 by an American, Hiram Bingham.
Machu Picchu remains a mystery as no one can be sure why it was built and why it was abandoned although there are many theories.
